Congressional Term Limits

Why should congressmen and women have term limits? With an undercurrent of uprising American citizens clamoring for a Convention of States, many new proposed issues and limiting factors for the government have circled through the internet. Not least of all being term limits to Congressmen and women, limiting them to a max of 12 years in a particular office. Here is a very brief list reasons for term limits:

- Allows regular replacements of people who don't live in the "DC Bubble". Many congressmen have campaigned and promised their constituents much in order to be elected, but after many long years at Capitol Hill, politicians seem to lose track of what's happening around the rest of the country. Renewing the office with fresh representatives allows for people from the area to know what the voters want.

- Provides incentive to help their state and federal governments, because they'll be just another average joe dealing with those policies when their term is up. How will legislators vote for increases in taxes or forced health insurance coverage if, once their term is up, they'll be reaping what they sow?

- Incumbent legislators have access to funds that challengers just don't have, creating a steep difficulty curve to campaigning. These funds may come from donors of special interest groups that will want to keep the sitting legislator if they favor their needs, or the party they're affiliated to will want them to stay, but withhold financial support to a challenger.

- Realistically, voters participation is extremely low with congressional elections, and voters will likely vote down party lines. Having new people may increase interest in voting. While I admit this can be a stretch, but it would certainly be interesting to see if this works out like that.

The Media is Not the Enemy

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/445204/mika-brzezinski-journalism-gaffe

Jonah Goldberg writes in the National Review that while the media has played a major role in influencing the judgement and opinions of their viewership, President Trump's typical blasting-from-the-hip style attacks are unwarranted and unnecessary. He prefaces his commentary with Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski, and her recent comment on how it is the press' job, not the President's, to "control exactly what people think". While Mr. Goldberg believes that it was a simple mistake on word play and not a slip of the evil master plan of the media, Ms. Brzezinski certainly caused a stir among Republicans and Conservatives.

I applaud Mr. Goldberg's integrity as he calls out the President for his gross generalizing, but the media isn't off the hook. After all, a portion of voters who got Trump elected were tired of being ignored, belittled, and lectured for the past eight years under Obama. Reporters hardly gave Obama any obstacles or tough questions, and when the Right did, they were branded as bigots, racists, etc. Now we have reporters wondering why the Right isn't asking tough questions to Trump.

The political Right see this hypocrisy. President Trump's election has showed the world that they have had enough.

Goldberg goes on to describe how the fat cats who own many news outlets, including his own, have set directives to censor or change certain statements, such as "illegal immigrants", but instead have to use the more PC term "undocumented citizens". The main focus right after Inauguration Day has been all over the Russian "hacking" of the election, despite the laughter and mocking served to Trump up to the point when he won. What a three-sixty. The media specializes to use wordplay to spin the story, but that doesn't mean the facts have changed.

Overall, the article pointed out many failings of the media. Certainly the President nor the Republican controlled Congress are above reprieve. I feel it's time that both sides were fair on reporting the FACTS, because the people are losing trust in them very quickly. But the more heavy Left news outlets like CNN, MSNBC, HuffPo, and all the rest continue to go down the road of dividing instead of reconciliation, then the trust gap will only continue to widen. This is America, for God's sake, and people have the right to different opinions! While it may be different than yours, everyone has the right to speak their mind. The mainstream media had better wake up to this fact, or they will remain the enemy of many.

Betsy DeVos's Opposition

This article written by a Fox News commentator illustrates a few reasons why our new Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, is an attractive cabinet pick. It also brings up speculation on possible reasons why Democratic leadership in Congress have waged fierce resistance on her confirmation. I honestly haven't been following the debacle over her confirmation, but I believe that this article can perhaps shed a little light to both sides of the aisle. To the democratic left, it'll help show why many Republicans consider her the right choice for the job. For the republican right, some questions will be asked on if Democrat congress-folk are really concerned over "lack of experience", or are playing a game to keep power and control with their benefactors and supporters.
